Компания Samsung SDI, входящая в состав Samsung Group, разработала светодиодный дисплей длиной 3 дюйма, поддерживающий разрешение 800 x 480 пикселей. Для сравнения, разрешение современных OLED-дисплеев с такими размерами составляет 320 x 240 пикселей, то есть примерно в четыре раза меньше. Повысить разрешение удалось за счет уплотнения пикселей. Инженеры Samsung SDI удалили треть вспомогательных пикселей и разместили основные пиксели ближе друг к другу.

Качество изображения также было улучшено. Дисплей покрывает весь диапазон NTSC, а коэффициент контрастности достигает значения 1000:1. В среднем дисплей потребляет около 0,4 Вт. Благодаря низкой инертности светодиодов он способен отображать резкие движения без заметного смазывания.

В компании считают, что подобные дисплеи найдут широкое применение в мобильных телефонах, портативных медиаплеерах, игровых консолях, коммуникаторах и т.д. Массовое производство дисплеев под конкретные продукты планируется начать летом 2008 г. Поставки тестовых образцов начнутся в начале года.
