На выставке потребительской электроники Toshiba сообщила о разработке и утверждении стандарта трехслойных дисков HD DVD объемом 51 Гб. Стандарт дисков HD DVD, имеющих 3 информационных слоя, был представлен Toshiba еще в апреле, а одобрение Ассоциации получил 31 августа.

Каждый слой диска HD DVD может вмещать до 15 Гб, тогда как один слой Blu-ray позволять вместить 25 Гб. Чтобы превзойти объем дисков противоборствующего формата, разработчики 3-хслойного диска HD DVD добились увеличения емкости одного слоя до 17 Гб, что позволило увеличить общую емкость диска до 51 Гб.
Благодаря тому, что физическая структура новых дисков такая же как и у DVD и ранее анонсированных HD DVD, стоимость производства 51 Гб дисков почти не отличается. Пока не поступало информации о том, смогут ли такие диски проигрываться на существующем оборудовании, потребуется ли обновление программного обеспечения или же стоит ожидать выпуск новых проигрывателей.
