Инженеры Калифорнийского университета (UCSD, Сан-Диего, США), сконструировали дисплей с самым больши разрешением в мире - 220 миллионов пикселей. Система установлена в одном из подразделений Калифонийского института телекоммуникаций и информационных технологий (Calit2) и соединена оптическим каналом с другим зданием Calit2 в Ирвине (Калифорния, США), которое тоже может похвастаться предыдущим подобным рекордом. Вторая часть системы, расположенная в городе Ирвин, состоит из 55 дисплеев Dell и управляется Linux. Новая система HIPerSpace между Ирвином и Сан-Диего соединена с помощью высокоэффективных, выделенных оптических каналов, пропускной способностью до до двух гигабит в секунду (2Gbps).<br /><br />"Мы не намерены останавливаться", - сказал Фалько Куестер (Falko Kuester), профессор визуализации и виртуальной реальности, доцент структурной инженерии Инженерной школы UCSD Jacobs. "HIPerSpace представляет собой уникальную среду для визуального анализа и киберинфраструктуры исследований, и сейчас мы ищем средства для удвоения мощности системы, чтобы достичь полумиллиарда пикселей, что в перспективе дасто возможность построения гигапиксельного дисплея".<br /><br />Куестер является главным архитектором систем, развернутых в зданиях Calit2. До прошлой недели дисплей в Ирвине, построенный в 2005 году, держал мировой рекорд разрешения - 200 миллионов пикселей. Он расположен в центре визуализации и обработки изображений, которым руководит Куестер. Суперграфический кластер состоит из 80 видеокарт NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600. "Графика и вычислительные мощности этих видеокарт просто невероятны", - делится впечатлениями Куестер. "Теоретическая производительность кластера составила почти 40 Терафлопс. Думаю, пару лет назад с такими мощностями можно было бы занять достойное место среди суперкомпьютеров мира. Хотя это чисто теоретические цифры, сравнение говорит о потенциале этого нового блока, который выходят далеко за рамки создания впечатляющей визуальной информации."<br /><br />Вычислительная мощность системы пригодится для разного рода крупномасштабных приложений, оперирующих с большим количеством разнообразных данных, например, биомедицине, исследованиях Земли и климата планеты. Кроме того, система, объединяющая распределённую графическую систему, позволяет обмениваться исследовательскими данными между двумя интситутами.
