В некоторых последних публикациях проглядывается тенденция к превосходству Blu-ray над HD DVD, что позволило некоторым он-лайн изданиям предположить, что Microsoft планирует осуществить для своей приставки Xbox 360 поддержку HD формата Sony в качестве «запасного варианта». Подобные слухи вызвали гневную реакцию официального представителя корпорации ведущего блог Gamerscoreblog, использующего ник FightinSunDevil.

«Некоторые он-лайн источники подхватили эту историю, и распустили в Интернете слух, что, якобы, началось все со статьи Associated Press, которой, на самом деле, никогда не существовало, и вырванных из контекста фраз репортажа ITmedia вышедшего в январе» возмущается официальный «блоггер» Microsoft «Эта информация преподноситься как «новость» и «результат последнего интервью», что не является правдой».

В упомянутом январском репортаже ITmedia вице-президент Microsoft Питер Мур (Peter Moore) сказал что «Xbox 360 обладает достаточной гибкостью, что бы адаптироваться под нужды покупателей, что позволяет Microsoft добавлять дополнительную функциональность по желанию покупателей – доказательством чего может служить выпуск HD DVD плеера в качестве дополнительного аксессуара». Некоторые из новостных сайтов решили, что из этого заявления можно сделать вывод о возможном выпуске Blu-ray плеера в качестве аксессуара для Xbox 360. По утверждению FightinSunDevil, эти спекуляции не имеют под собой никаких оснований.

В заключение своей заметки он пишет: «Мы преданны нашему формату HD DVD, нет ни малейшей вероятности поддержки конкурирующего оптического формата»
