В отличие от традиционных плоских панелей с подсветкой из светоизлучающих диодов, где на каждый канал RGB приходятся светодиоды соответствующего цвета — красные, зеленые и синие, в новой панели используются только синие светодиоды, заявляют в Samsung. Использование меньшего числа элементов внутри панели приведет к уменьшению ее стоимости, что, в свою очередь, позволит создавать ЖК-телевизоры с большими диагоналями по приемлемым ценам. Еще одно достоинство меньшего количества элементов — сокращение выбросов в окружающую среду таких элементов, как галоген и ртуть.

По словам представителей Samsung, технология "белой" LED-подстветки позволит сократить издержки на производство ЖК-панелей с LED до 40% и поможет устройствам данного класса к 2010 г. завоевать около трети рынка плоскопанельных телевизоров. О дате начала продаж телевизоров на основе новой технологии компания не сообщила, однако заверила, что разработка технологии будет завершена до конца ближайшего месяца.

Впрочем, по мнению участников рынка, стоимость телевизоров нового поколения едва ли будет существенно отличаться от стоимости существующих моделей со светодиодной подсветкой. "Технология светодиодной подсветки не нова, и они используются уже рядом производителей, — замечает менеджер по маркетингу российского представительства Panasonic Александр Харин. — В настоящее время стоимость подобных телевизоров достаточно высока, и новейшие аппараты от южнокорейского производителя с белой подсветкой (если таковые появятся) также в ближайшее время будут стоить достаточно дорого. Хотя такая технология позволяет получить более четкое изображение с более реальными цветами".
