У Blu-ray проблемы с интерактивностью. Обладатели Blu-ray находятся в ожидании новых Java-технологий и высоко-интерактивных возможностей, подобно тем, которые были реализованы в анонсированном недавно сборнике «Матрицы» на HD DVD. Всё это может привести к необходимости обновления оборудования этой зимой. Как сообщает BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association), все проигрыватели, выпущенные после 31 Октября должны поддерживать технологию BD-J, обеспечивающую PiP (картинка-в-картинке), 256MB постоянной памяти и (для проигрывателей с Интернет-подключением) 1GB памяти для скачивания информации. На сегодняшний день необходимости в этих возможностях нет, а поддержка технологии PiP даже не заявлена в списке опций PS3 и бюджетного проигрывателя Sony BDP-S300, который дебютирует этим летом. До сих пор поддержка BD-J оставалась неточной- многим проигрывателям необходимо обновление, чтобы поддерживать картины вроде "Спуск", который для отображения PiP был записан в виде двух разных версий на диск объемом 50Гб. Исполнительный продюсер DVD Ван Линг (Звездные войны, Терминатор 2: спец. издание), работая над своим первым (точно не установлено) BD-J релизом, беспокоится по поводу поддержки всех новшеств на таком большом количестве проигрывателей с разными возможностями. В то время, как HD DVD заявило о поддержке PiP и постоянной памяти на всех проигрывателях с момента старта. Что ж, посмотрим, удастся ли Blu-ray оборудованию обзавестись новыми опциями и при этом сохранить тенденцию к удешевлению.
