Выступая на конференции GDC 2007, представители SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) Джейсон Пэйдж и Майкл Келли (Jason Page и Michael Kelly) поделились своими наработками в области будущих аудио-технологий для игровых консолей. Они заявили, что все больше разработчиков планирует использовать MIDI-технологии для озвучивания новых проектов.

Будущее аудио за форматом MIDI Неожиданность этого заявления в том, что у большинства геймеров MIDI ассоциируется со старенькими играми для ПК, с их примитивным назойливым звуком из динамика системного блока, который генерировался средствами звуковых карт с поддержкой MIDI. Одно время MIDI считалось довольно перспективным инструментом для озвучивания игр, но со временем, когда эта технология была вытеснена более прогрессивными форматами. Многие разработчиков стали использовать заранее созданные мелодии форматов mp3 и wav.
Тем не менее, в SCEE утверждают, что в формат MIDI удалось вдохнуть новую жизнь. Благодаря мощи современных консолей, MIDI-инструменты могут зазвучать по-новому: ничуть не хуже, а то и лучше, высококачественного аудио. При этом размер музыкальных файлов и, как следствие, время их загрузки будет гораздо меньше.
Кроме того, многие разработчики игр сетуют на отсутствие интерактивности при использовании обычных музыкальных файлов. Они хотят, что бы фоновая музыка напрямую зависела от игрового процесса: чтобы, в зависимости от происходящего в игре, настораживала, встряхивала или расслабляла игрока. По заявлению Джейсона и Майкла, формат MIDI поможет прекрасно справиться с этой задачей, а учитывая значительно возросшее качество звука, слияние игрока с игровым персонажем может подняться до небывалых высот.
Что ж, похоже, не за горами то день, когда в очереди за новыми игровыми консолями вместе с любителями игр будут выстраиваться и заядлые аудиофилы.
