Проекционные телевизоры на микрозеркалах, управляемых чипом, являются разработкой компании Texas Instruments (TI). В основе системы лежит DMD-чип (Digital Micromirror Device) с матрицей из миллионов микрозеркал, каждое из которых формирует точку изображения в определенном месте экрана. Еще в 1996 году компания разработала цифровой проекционный блок DLP (Digital Light Processing — цифровая обработка света). Этот продукт предлагается в виде оптико-механического модуля, который содержит чипы DMD, электронику управления и оптическую систему с источником света.

На CES 2007 компания Texas Instruments продемонстрировала свой новый проекционный DLP-телевизор на микрозеркальных чипах DMD. Особенностями изобретения являются очень высокая степень контрастности – 100000:1, а также использования в качестве подсветки свечения твердотельных светодиодов. Демонстрирующийся RPTV (rear-projection TV – телевизоры с обратной подсветкой) обладает разрешением 1080p (Full HD).

Такая высокая степень контрастности была достигнута благодаря использованию 0,65" DLP-чипсета производства TI с оптимизированным управлением массивами твердотельных светодиодов (solid-state LED). Помимо высокой контрастности, насыщенность цвета достигает 140% по шкале NTSC. Технология DLP позволяет создавать довольно тонкие телевизоры. На выставке в Лас-Вегасе демонстрировалась 65" панель толщиной всего 10". На данный момент технологию DLP используют ряд крупных производителей, среди которых Samsung, Mitsubishi, NuVision, Panasonic, Philips, RCA, Toshiba и другие.
