Компания Toshiba, разработчик формата HD-DVD объявила том, что на рынок поступили около двух миллионов плееров, способных работать с такими оптическими носителями. Помимо этого, по планам сотрудников компании, к концу 2007 года на рынке будут представлены 600 кинофильмов, записанных на дисках HD-DVD.<br /><br />Представители Toshiba заявили о том, что спрос на устройства воспроизведения дисков HD-DVD превзошел их ожидания. Внешний привод для работы с этими оптическими носителями нового поколения, созданный специально для игровой системы Xbox 360, стал бестселлером и был раскуплен в кратчайшие сроки.<br /><br />Помимо этого, в Toshiba заявили о создании трехслойного HD-DVD, способного хранить до 51 гигабайта данных на одной стороне (соответственно, в перспективе выпуск дисков емкостью в 100 гигабайт).<br /><br />Так называемая война форматов между оптическими носителями Blu-ray, разработанными в Sony и HD-DVD, созданными в компании Toshiba, началась еще в 2005 году. Тогда японские компании не смогли достигнуть договоренности и привести эти носители, созданные с применением схожих технологий, к единому формату. Первыми на рынке появились диски и плееры HD-DVD (весной 2006 года), а спустя несколько месяцев дебютировал и Blu-ray. Стоимость плееров для дисков Blu-ray значительно превосходит стоимость устройств воспроизведения для HD-DVD – почти в два раза.
