По заявлению главы подразделения Toshiba, отвечающего за потребительскую электронику, компания уверена, что на этом рынке у нее есть все шансы превзойти Sony, с именем которой во многом сейчас ассоциируется процессор Cell.<br /><br />Разработка последнего обошлась Toshiba, Sony и IBM в несколько миллиардов долларов. Впервые потребительский рынок увидел Cell в игровой консоли Sony PlayStation 3, дебютировавшей в прошлом месяце, однако такое применение - лишь одно из многих возможных. На очереди - использование процессора в телевизорах высокого разрешения и бытовых видеорекордерах.<br /><br />Йошихиде Фуджии (Yoshihide Fujii), президент подразделения Toshiba, ответственного за разработку продуктов цифрового дома, впрочем, отказался назвать конкретные решения, где стоит ожидать Cell, сославшись на то, что их разработка находится в процессе, однако, на вопрос, успеет ли компания выпустить свои продукты на рынок раньше, чем это сделает Sony, без колебаний ответил "да".<br /><br />Сама группа Cell Development Center была создана в составе Toshiba в начале текущего года, по крайней мере, её презентация состоялось на Consumer Electronics Show в прошедшем январе. Источник считает, что шансы увидеть продукты на базе Cell в следующем году минимальны.
