Ажиотажный спрос на Sony PlayStation 3, легко предсказуемый задолго до начала анонса, моментально поглотил стартовую партию консолей. В то время, как японская компания трудится над подготовкой новой партии приставок, которую геймеры увидят в декабре, начинают поступать претензии от первых покупателей. Большинство жалоб касается аппаратной части PlayStation 3 и возникающих технических проблем. Некоторые экземпляры страдают от перегрева, не включаются или занижают разрешение HD-видеопотока игр и фильмов с дисков Blu-ray при выводе на телевизор. Все эти сообщения приходят, в основном, от пользователей из Соединенных Штатов.
Что касается первых двух претензий, об этом продавцы слышат с самого начала поставок с середины ноября. Официальных комментариев от Sony по этому поводу пока не поступало. Как видим, начало жизненного пути PlayStation 3 напоминает судьбу Microsoft Xbox 360, которая в свое время страдала подобными болезнями.    
Последняя из перечисленных проблем наблюдается при просмотре видео на HD-телевизорах первых поколений с поддержкой режима 1080i (1920 x 1080, чересстрочная развертка). При работе с такими аппаратами и выводе видео с разрешением 720p (1280 x 720, прогрессивная развертка) PlayStation 3 переключается в режим 480p (720 x 480). Представители японской компании признали существование такой проблемы и объяснили ее недоработкой программного обеспечения консоли. Как было обещано, новая прошивка, которая должна решить этот вопрос, будет выпущена в самое ближайшее время. 
Американские геймеры не одиноки. Среди тайваньских пользователей также есть недовольные, которые жалуются на перегрев, зависания или самопроизвольное отключение PlayStation 3. Более того, поступают сигналы о несовместимости с некоторыми играми для PlayStation 2. После вмешательства местных органов защиты прав потребителей гонконгское отделение Sony Computer Entertainment приняло решение о замене некоторых консолей, имеющих серьезные дефекты.
