Нелегкий жизненный путь игровой консоли Microsoft Xbox-360 начался  в конце прошлого года. После того, как в ноябре 2005 года отгремели фанфары в ее честь, Microsoft долго не могла удовлетворить повышенный спрос, подогретый успешной рекламной кампанией, впечатляющими характеристиками "ящика" и огромным списком обещанных игр под новую игровую платформу. В свое оправдание компания жаловалась на задержки с поставкой некоторых комплектующих, коих в консоли насчитывается около 1700 штук. Позже из-за просчетов в оценке потенциала рынков США, Европы и Японии появилась проблема с балансом поставок по регионам. На родине Sony и Nintendo игровая приставка от Microsoft не пользуется таким спросом, как, например, в среде американских геймеров. В итоге получилось так, что в США Xbox-360 катастрофически не хватало, в Европе они были в достаточном количестве, а вот во многих японских магазинах новые "ящики" подолгу пылились на полках. Жалобы на перегрев Xbox-360 и поломки - это история для отдельного рассказа. 
Как известно, изначально в Xbox-360 заложена поддержка HD-разрешений 720p и 1080i. Вывод видео с DVD или игр с разрешением 1080p (1920x1080, прогрессивная развертка) не была предусмотрена. С развитием сферы HDTV и распространением больших плоских панелей режим 1080p становится актуальнее. И данный факт может оказаться определяющим при выборе игровой приставки. Перед покупателем встает вопрос - выбрать сейчас консоль от Microsoft, не позволяющую использовать современную ТВ-панель "на полную катушку", или набраться терпения и подождать ноябрьский анонс приставки Sony PlayStation 3, которая сможет выводить картинку игр и фильмов с разрешением 1080p.   
В преддверии выставки Tokyo Game Show 2006, которая пройдет с 22 по 24 сентября, вице-президент Microsoft Game Studios господин Шейн Ким (Shane Kim) дал интервью сайту Kotaku.com. В беседе Шейн Ким признался, что в конце этого года у владельцев Xbox-360 появится возможность обновить программное обеспечение приставки, которое включит поддержку вывода видео с разрешением 1080p. 
Казалось бы, это очень хорошая новость, особенно в свете информации о появлении в будущем году обновленной версии консоли со встроенным приводом HD-DVD, источником видео стандарта HDTV. Но если вспомнить, что Xbox-360 имеет только компонентный и VGA-выходы, основную массу владельцев больших современных панелей эта новость вряд ли порадует, потому что большинство из них способно принять HD-видеосигнал в разрешении 1080p только через интерфейс HDMI. Поэтому для кардинального решения "проблемы HD 1080p" в Microsoft Xbox-360 нужна аппаратная модернизация, а не обновление ПО.
