Страсти на поле битвы форматов Blu-ray и HD-DVD не утихают. Сторонники конкурирующих стандартов разбились на лагеря и параллельно с решением технических задач заняты не менее важным делом - привлечением на свою сторону ключевых фигур киноиндустрии и рынка персональных компьютеров. Именно от их благосклонности зависит успех и популярность на рынке того или иного формата. 
Компании, издающие кино и видеопродукцию на дисках, выдвигают несколько основных требований к новым форматам: обеспечение высокого качества изображения в разрешениях HDTV, надежная защита содержания диска от несанкционированного копирования, совместимость с популярными форматами недалекого прошлого, а также низкая себестоимость носителей. Выполнение всех этих требований под силу любому из новых стандартов оптической записи и  заложено авторами Blu-ray и HD-DVD еще на стадии разработки. Поэтому вопросы благосклонности "боссов" киноиндустрии лежат, скорее, в "политической" плоскости. 
О решении студий Columbia, TriStar и Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) нетрудно догадаться. Все они работают под покровительством Sony Pictures Entertainment, которая, в свою очередь, принадлежит японской корпорации, стоящей у истоков стандарта Blu-ray. Некоторые другие влиятельные компании, например, Disney, Warner Brothers и Paramount решили соблюсти "нейтралитет" и выпускать свою продукцию на носителях обоих конкурирующих форматов. Хотя ранее их представители заявляли о поддержке одного из них. 
Но не все так гладко в судьбе Blue-ray. Недавно появилась информация о переносе европейского релиза еще одного "двигателя" нового формата игровой консоли Sony PlayStation 3 из-за задержек с поставками "голубых" лазерных диодов. 
Теперь же с критикой Blu-ray  выступил президент Universal Studios Home Entertainment Крейг Корнблау (Craig Kornblau). Было сказано, что HD-DVD вышел на рынок раньше и может обеспечить лучшее качество изображения и звука, чем Blu-ray. В пользу своей версии Крейг привел обзор трех известных фильмов, изданных на дисках HD-DVD и Blu-ray компанией Warner Brothers. Статья была опубликована журналом High-Def Digest в начале августа. По заключению тестеров, изображение на дисках HD-DVD отличалось лучшим качеством и было лишено некоторых шумов и артефактов, что присутствовали на Blu-ray. Однако последние сравнительные тесты второй волны дисков от той же компании-издателя показали несколько лучшие для Blu-ray результаты. В сентябрьской статье специалисты из High-Def Digest  отмечают, что качество контента на новых дисках Blu-ray удалось улучшить, в первую очередь, благодаря применению кодека VC-1 вместо MPEG-2. 
Несмотря на заявление руководства Universal, обусловленное, скорее, общей политикой студии, чем некоторыми спорными обзорами первых дисков, дебаты о достоинствах и недостатках HD-DVD и Blu-ray продолжаются и будут разгораться с новой силой по мере популяризации новых форматов.
